what human rights mean to me and my community.

The concept of human right is not strange to an average african, especially to Nigerians. It basically involves the idea of freedom granted to man bcuaes he is man,i mean because he is human. To me as a legal practitioner the concept means something wider than freedom granted to man becuase of the humanity ofman. It evolves so many things,it entails rights to live, right to be heard freely, rights to be represented personally or by a legal practitioner of ones choice.
The idea of human rights has taken on some new concepts like what some would want to be considered as new generation rightsi.e rights to a decent living, right to basic health care, right to education and other types of new generation rights.
In my part ofthe world,we are still in the process of securing for ourselves what we nowreferto as SOCIO-ECONOMIC RIGHTS,I.E RIGHT TO A DECENT A LIVING WAGES FROM EMPLOYMENT,RIGHT TO BE GOVERNED BY A DEMOCRATIC AND ACCOUNTABLE GOVTS.
WHILE SOME PARTS OF THE WORLD HAVE TAKEN SOME ASPECT OF HUMAN RIGHTS FOR GRANTED,WE ARE STILL CLAMORING FOR RIGTS TO A DECENT LIVING,RIGHTS TO BE HEARD BY AN INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY,RIGHTS NOT TO BE DETAINED FOR UNREASONABLELENGTH OFTIME AND OTHER RIGHTS IN SUCH CATEGORY.
AS WE CELEBRATE THE 60TH YEAR OFTHE EXISTENCE OF UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF RIGHTS,IT IS MY HOPE THAT PEOPLE FROM MY PART OF THE WORLD,WOULD LIVE TO ENJOY THE BASIC RIGHTS LIKE RIGHT TO A GOOD FOOD,ACCOMMODATION,AND HEALTHCARE FACILITY,THESE ARE STILL PART OFTHE ESSENTIAL NEEDS TO OUR PEOPLE IN AFRICA AND OTHER THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES.
THANKS,
